RIO DE JANEIRO, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Tuesday confirmed that he will nominate his son Eduardo Bolsonaro to the position of Brazil's ambassador to the United States.
"From my part, it is already a done deal," the president said.
He stressed that though his decision is already made, there are some procedures to complete such as consultation with the U.S. government.
Moreover, the candidate must be questioned by Brazil's Senate and approved by both the Senate and the House.
Bolsonaro has been much criticized for the nomination, as many consider the appointment as a blatant case of nepotism. The president has denied the accusation, citing a Supreme Court decision that the rules against nepotism do not apply to this specific case.
There is also criticism that Eduardo Bolsonaro lacks enough experience and qualification to occupy one of the most demanding and complex positions in all of Brazil's diplomacy.
The president's son, who has just turned 35, the minimum required age to occupy an ambassador's position, is a federal representative and heads the Foreign Relations Committee under the House. However, he has little strong experience in high-level international negotiations.
The Brazilian embassy in Washington has been left without an ambassador since April when Bolsonaro removed the previous one.
